Sunday, January 24, 2010

JCT showed its supremacy to hold its I-League rival Chirag United 1-1 in 11th round I-League match played in Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium this evening. Chirag United was the favourite out of these two to win this match, as this season Chirag is one of the strongest teams in I-League and they took the field with an objective to gather three valuable points from this home tie against JCT. However, JCT had beaten Mohun Bagan and drew against Kingfisher East Bengal earlier in the start of season so it was aiming to atleast preserve its unbeaten record in Kolkata this season and JCT had made it clear that it was in the mood to put up a gallant fight.

First real chance of the match came in the 7th minute when Jayanta Sen of Chirag pulled off a good air pass to Edmilson who found himself in space inside the JCT box but he reacted late which allowed JCT defender Jaspal Singh to clear the ball away from danger. In the 9th minute of the game, Penn Orji took a brilliant shot after making good footwork in the Chirag defense, which was well saved by Chirag goalkeeper Somnath Khara. On another attack in the very next minute, Penn Orji found Balwant Singh unmarked in the edge of Chirag penalty area and gave him an accurate pass, but final shot from Balwant Singh went wide off target. Chirag succeeded to take lead early on through Joshimar who headed home first goal of the match. The Chirag skipper put in a great freekick delivery, which was met by a fine header of Brazilian striker Joshimar. Thereafter, JCT started moving up with some fine build-ups initiated by playmaker Penn Orji. Finally, JCT got the chance to make a breakthrough in the 35th minute when Baldeep Singh produced a good cross looking Ajay Singh but it was eventually missed by Ajay Singh and the rushing Chirag defenders but Penn Orji dashed in and scored the equalizer for JCT. In counter attacking move by Chirag saw Joshimar entered the penalty area and struck a powerful right footer shot which was saved by JCT skipper and goalkeeper Karanjit Singh in the 38th minute to keep the scores level. Chirag United was on the search of an elusive goal in the last two minutes of first half and got a corner on which Gouranga Biswas almost took a crack on goal but Karanjit was alert enough to save his team from danger.

In the second session both the teams entered the field with a motive to take early lead so as to earn three points out of this match, but both of the teams had to content with one point each as none side could make an impact on the scoreline despite of the superb moves from both the sides. JCT's skipper and goalkeeper Karanjit Singh who had a brilliant outing today was rightly awarded the Man of the Match award.
