JCT thrash Salgaocar 4-0 to finish 3rd in I league standing

Saturday, February 23, 2008

JCT ended their I-League campaign with an emphatic victory over Salgaocar SC to finish third and pocket a cash prize of Rs.20 Lakhs at the Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana. The home side were back to their best and showed good mobility in the attacks. The Salgaocar custodian had a harrowing time as the JCT strike duo of Sunil Chhetri and Eduardo da Silva Escobar applied continuous pressure. The result was to be seen when Sunil Chhetri headed a Julius Akpele long pass to give the home side a deserved lead in the 30th minute of the game. Thereafter, in the 36th minute Daljit Singh dodged past a few defenders and entered the box to find Eduardo who slammed the ball into the net. The Punjab's leading outfit went all out thereafter and found another thanks to some good work by Baljit Sahni who dispossessed Salgaocar’s Fabio Dos Passos to see Sunil Chhetri send in a sizzling shot in the 43rd minute. Salgaocar never really looked in the game and it seemed they had given up all hope knowing their predicament. After the change of ends, it was the same story and Eduardo added another off a flagkick just two minutes (47th minute) into the second half. Sunil Chhetri was adjudged the man of the match.
